New Zealand - Main

New Zealand always had a special pull on us due to its impressive landscape and interesting wildlife. From a wildlife perspective kiwis of course are the most well known as well as many other rare birds, some of which can only be found now on island sanctuaries as they have been extinct from the mainland due to the introduction of non native predator species like stouts and rats. From a landscape perspective the mountains, valleys and beaches have been made famous in countless of movies and are an attraction on their own.

Given its attraction to us it is a bit surprising that the trip was a bit unexpected as we were researching plane tickets for the Thanksgiving period and found a deal for New Zealand and the rest is history. The focus during our 2 weeks on the two major islands was on nature and landscape and less on cities - we drove a lot on curvy roads (probably the most we have even seen), stayed on remote islands and in general enjoyed hiking and exploring the country.
